Dogs

This is Miles. He was rescued from Ma’a City Pound on October 19th, 2010. If you look closely at the picture you can see his never-been-clipped toenails and hairless ears, probably caused by mange mites. His skin is a relief map of ticks, fleas, and dried scabs. Though not in great shape, Miles is a gentle soul. If you could reach out to touch his malnourished frame, he would greet you by placing his tiny snout on your hand.

Malaya isn’t much for making important life decisions. When we found her, she was making her home right next to the City Pound, playing with the very men whose job it is to trap and kill street dogs like her. She’s among friends now, though, and is adjusting nicely to her new surroundings under BARK’s care. She gets the name Malaya, meaning free or independent in Tagalog, from her footloose nature. It took 3 people nearly an hour to capture her when she escaped from her cage.

Like her friend Malaya, Liezel is a 2-3 month old female mongrel. She came to us with an injured eye, belly full of tapeworms, and coat covered with fleas and ticks. A little veterinary attention went a long way for this pup. After only a week, all of her ailments have been alleviated and she now enjoys tearing up garbage bags and bustling around the yard.

BARK only admits dogs that are taken from the pound and would otherwise be inhumanely killed. Limited funding ties down the scope of our operation and we do not want our standards of care to be compromised by becoming overwhelmed with animals to help. With that being said, an exception was made for Maganda (meaning beauty in Tagolog), who our friends at Ananda Marga found hanging around their compound. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Baba’s Foundation made a request on Maganda’s behalf for us to break the rules just this once and we did…It also didn’t hurt that this dog truly is a beauty.

Mikail, which means hope, was given his name by his current foster parent. It’s an appropriate name, as he was snatched away from the pound in the eleventh hour. The Veterinarians at The Ark Animal Health Clinic estimate that his blood is mostly that of a dachshund. His temperament is friendly and easy-going.

This dog contracted Parvovirus while in the Pound. Although he received a full court-press in medical care, it was too little too late. He died in the hands of qualified veterinarians on December 20th.
